Guitar tuning guide: standard, Drop D and common questions

How to tune a guitar online

Choose Guitar → Standard, allow microphone access, and pluck each open string separately. The tuner selects the nearest target string. You can also tap a specific string to lock it. A needle pointing left means flat; a needle pointing right means sharp. A centered needle means within about five cents of the target.

What frequencies should the open strings have?

With A4 = 440 Hz, the standard targets are E2 (82.41 Hz), A2 (110 Hz), D3 (146.83 Hz), G3 (196 Hz), B3 (246.94 Hz) and E4 (329.63 Hz). Your measured frequency updates as you tune.

How do I tune to Drop D?

Select Drop D. The lowest string becomes D2 (73.42 Hz); the five higher strings remain the same. The tuner measures the actual note against the chosen target, rather than always snapping to the nearest chromatic semitone.

Can I use another instrument?

Yes. The RecoTune music workspace includes bass, ukulele, violin-family instruments, an 88-key online piano and a recording studio.
